You don't have to disable Ethernet card.
In fact you can use either your Ethernet card or your wi-fi to share the access to the internet for other wireless laptops.
There are are numerous how-to's on the subject, i do it through VMappliance called "Internet Connection Sharing Appliance" :
    http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/395

Instructions are for MS 2000 but you get the idea.
    http://www.vmware.com/support/refere...share_w2k.html

It takes little tweaking but once you get it done it is bulletproof and this way you can use your wi-fi and ethernet card normally and simply with a click of a mouse on the vmware icon they can become internet gateways for the other computers

Excellent walk through, thank you much to everyone. My only input is that if you are using Kubuntu (with the KNetworkManager program), completely exit KNetworkManager or the EVDO card will never get the correct DNS settings. Or atleast this was my experience. Thanks again.

Re: [SOLVED] HowTo set up EVDO card or usb enabled phone(CDMA)

    Hi,

I am "Brand New" to Ubuntu and since I have installed it yesterday I absolutely love it!! What a great OS indeed.

I am not new to Unix and have quite a experience in Unix (except Linux) so I am trying out new things.

Here is my problem with using Motorola V770, LG Voyager and LG 8600 phone as modem with Ubuntu71.

I set it devices as in instruction on first chat and worked like a charm! I immediately connected via Motorola V770 by wvdial. Speed is not bad at all! And I tested out different web pages.

But LG phones are different story, both Voyager and 8600 did not work as phone modem.

    Here errors I am getting:

WvDial<*1>: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
WvModem<*1>: Cannot get information for serial port.
    WvDial<*1>: Initializing modem.
    WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATZ
    WvDial Modem<*1>: ATZ
    WvDial Modem<*1>: OK
    WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    WvDial Modem<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    WvDial Modem<*1>: OK
    WvDial<*1>: Modem initialized.
    WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATDT#777
    WvDial<*1>: Waiting for carrier.
    WvDial Modem<*1>: ATDT#777
    WvDial Modem<*1>: CONNECT
WvDial<*1>: Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
    WvDial<Notice>: Starting pppd at Fri Dec 21 15:50:58 2007
    WvDial<Notice>: Pid of pppd: 5908
    WvDial<*1>: Using interface ppp0
    WvDial<*1>: pppd: ؔ[06][08]
    WvDial<*1>: pppd: ؔ[06][08]
    WvDial<*1>: pppd: ؔ[06][08]
    WvDial<*1>: pppd: ؔ[06][08]
    WvDial<*1>: pppd: ؔ[06][08]
    WvDial<*1>: Disconnecting at Fri Dec 21 15:51:06 2007
WvDial<*1>: The PPP daemon has died: Authentication error.
WvDial<*1>: We failed to authenticate ourselves to the peer.
WvDial<*1>: Maybe bad account or password? (exit code = 19)
WvDial<*1>: man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
WvDial<Notice>: I guess that's it for now, exiting
WvDial<Notice>: The PPP daemon has died. (exit code = 19)

Interesting thing I noted that Motorola V700 seems to dial #777 as unknown number with data connection while LG phones shows its dials to 3g 1x Data. I assume since LG are newer models, they are trying to access High Speed National Access which requires username/passwords provided by Verizon when you sign up Broadband Access service $59/month in US.

Anyone has tried to use LG phones, specially new ones like Voyager (LG10000 or LG8600) and has experienced the same error? I will appreciate any help!

Thanks and great job on Ubuntu!!!

Re: [SOLVED] HowTo set up EVDO card or usb enabled phone(CDMA)

    Update:

I did try to disable EVDO from following steps on LG phones but still are getting same (exit code = 19) error.

Here are steps to disable EVDO...

    1) Press the Menu key (ok)
    2) Push the zero key (0) seven times
    3) Push the three key (3) for network select
    4) Push the one key (1) for Mode Preference
    5) Choose 1X Only or Digital Only Non Hybrid.

To re enable EV follow steps 1 - 4 and for step #5 choose Digital Only Hybrid

Btw my Motorola V710 (sorry for typo earlier) still works with my current wvdial.conf

    Thanks

I am excited about getting this to work but when I attempt the first step (removing the "#" symbols from those lines and saving) I am told that I do not have permission to save. Any advice?

You need to edit the config file with root privileges.

Sweet! How do I change my privilege level? I am sorry to ask such a basic question.

Seriously, I have been screwing around with this forever. I have looked all over the "mountdevsubfs.sh" document for a way to change my privileges to no avail.

    either use
    Code:
    sudo nano wvdial.conf
    or
    Code:
    gksudo gedit wvdial.conf
The second one lets you use gedit.

    Who_Cares,

Thanks, I was able to procede. I am no stuck on this part:

At the end of this output you will find your device witch will be represented like this: ttyACM0 or ttyUSB or similar , make note of it you will need it later.
I must have done something else wrong because nowhere in my output do I see anything that begins with tty.

Do you have any ideas as to why the device is not showing up?
